QUICK FACTS
Having a chronic form of arthritis like ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and its related diseases puts us at an increased risk of developing joint and bone problems that may require surgical intervention down the road. Although rarely used in the management of spondylitis, the decision to undergo any surgical procedure is one in which a patient and their doctor(s) should mutually agree upon. It may provide life-altering benefits, but it also poses potentially serious risks.
The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) is a nonprofit organization, providing education and practice management services for orthopaedic surgeons and allied health professionals. It also serves as an advocate for improved patient care and informs the public about the science of orthopaedics.
